Best Blue Ray Player?

April 16, 2010

I want a stand alone (no PS3) Blue Ray player that will work well with my 7.1 surround sound reciever. I also don’t want to spend $1000. Which ones should I look into. Thank you.

You kind of need to define your criteria.

Sony has come out with new ‘profiles’ for players and some great players are only 1.0 compatible. The newer 1.1 compatible players are out and you can find reviews in back issues of Home Theater magazine. But you pay for being on the bleeding edge.

The December issue of various electronics mags should be appearing soon. Look for the ones with “Best of the year” and “Editors Choice” article at your local book store and these usually have the players the pros like and why these units are better than others to let you know what criteria they used.

My choice would be the Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD. This player has gorgeous cosmetics to go along with its superb picture and sound quality, and will have all of the features that you should ever want or need.

This player retails for about $800, but I see no reason why you couldn’t find it for well under that if you know where to look.

Happy viewing!

Well I have the Sony BDP-S350 & I am very pleased with it. It does decode the Dolby Tru-HD & DTS-HD. But you must have the receiver to get it. I just spent almost $2K on a new TV (Sony KDL-32XBR6) & receiver (Yamaha RX-V663) to be completely in the “now” for Blu-Ray. So you see, if you haven’t upgraded most of everything else, you’ll be missing out on all that it’s capable of reproducing. But let me tell ya, I am blown away every time I watch a Blu-ray movie. I paid full price on the day my player was released. Since then the price has dropped down under $300 in many places. Last check it was $219 (Amazon.com). My bro bought one there the other day for that price. But do shop around for what is best for you. My opinions.

We’re going to have to go with “alis” here (but with one small addition). The Panasonic brand is pretty good and for the money and there are 2 models you should consider for different reasons.

The “DMP-BD35″ is full-blown “Profile 2.0″ (BD-Live), supporting all 3 HD audio formats (PCM, TrueHD and Master Audio) over an HDMI cable to a capable receiver for $299 retail:

Then for $100 more, the “DMP-BD55″ is only needed for folks with older receivers which don’t support HDMI audio or TrueHD/Master Audio decoding (and need to be connected with 8 RCA cables for audio):

These 2 models are in direct competition (with nearly identical features and benefits) with Sony’s “BDP-P350″ (also $299) and the “BDP-S550″ (also $399). Sony’s players come with free hardrives while Panasonic makes you buy a $10, 2GB “SD” card. Panasonic’s “DMP-BD35″ model is “Profile 2.0″ out of the box while Sony’s “BDP-350″ requires a FIRMWARE UPDATE.
